The American Psychological Association defines in-group bias as “the tendency to favor one’s own group, its members, its characteristics, and its products, particularly in reference to other groups.” Implicit bias researchers have found that in-group bias can have a significant impact on individuals, affecting the judgments and decisions we make as well as our behaviors. In fact, the research suggests that in-group bias is often more powerful than any out-group animus we harbor against people who are not like us. This session will explore the pitfalls of in-group bias and offer techniques for avoiding biased decision-making.
